Top Marks for a Fantastic Go for Green Launch
April 2008
To kick-off the Tenant Energy Awareness Program (TEAP) in their office at 3350 Douglas St., a group of seven Green Champions from ARES (Accommodation and Real Estate Services, BC Provincial Government) have gotten together to plan a plethora of yearlong activities.
The first plan is to have quarterly events beginning with the spring Earth Day launch that takes place on April 22nd. Using the Energy Issue newsletter provided in the TEAP package, a large boardroom in the office will be open from 2 pm to 3 pm on Earth Day and will serve as a drop in coffee break event. In addition, various stations will be set up to show what ARES will be doing for the year such as workstation audits and distribution of Green Tips. Other elements of the stations will include:
• Recycling ideas (what's right, what's not)
• A "Take the Pledge" table
• Free re-usable coffee mugs to encourage the use of re-usable instead of the paper cups
• Tree seedlings to give away for people who sign up as Friends of the Environment (names will be written on leaves which will be added to a virtual tree)
• The Carbon Hero Challenge for those that already ride bikes or carpool/bus to work
• A 30-day sustainability challenge to reduce and track carbon emissions saved and reward the top performers - a great way to encourage good behaviour!
Summer events will be planned for the office parking lot where the Green Champions hope to arrange for lessons on testing tires for correct air pressure; a bike clinic and perhaps a pocket market.
Possible fall activities could include a Green movie event at lunchtime.
As you can see, a lot of great planning has been taking place in this office!
ARES has permission to distribute the 52 Green Tips to all of Labour and Citizens' Services, accounting for approximately 2500 staff. This is a great opportunity to spread the word - the tips will be slightly modified to include some links to government and green team sites.
If you have a great idea and want to spread word of this program, feel free to let us know! We'd really like to hear what you have to say!
